Your star rating is based on how quickly you complete the entire level and not just defeat the end boss.
The Treasure Hunter (girl character) does have an awesome twirling knife attack that knocks a hoard back, Tai Chi Panda is a close-up fighter with a neat wide radius ground smashing attack, and the Glorious Warrior gets a bit more distance from the action with his long sword attacks.
